A New Rooster...

One of our most recent batches of chickens are beginning to mature into hens and roosters. These are supposed to all be the same breed: Production Red. In this breed, the body is supposed to be a "rust" shade, with the roosters having a few white feathers among their tail feathers. Occasionally, I have seen some white underfeathers on the neck which becomes visible when the rooster puffs up his neck for a display.

Chicken Games

Well, we found out who owns the chickens that are getting loose.  He picked up first batch and told us that if any more arrive, we can keep them.  Well, guess what?  First, one chicken arrived.  Then, a few days later, another arrived.  Now, we have two chicknes - maybe soon, we will get some eggs!

We finally broke down.  We hooked a second computer to the internet.  The one I am using is running Windows 98.  The "new" one is running Windows 2000 Professional.  I know, we are a little behind the times - Vista is already out.  New machines cost money and there is not much money in ranching!

It was a cold day in hell...

Today was the coldest Easter weekend in the recorded history of central Texas!  Yesterday, we got over four inches of snow!  This was the latest snowfall in central Texas by over a month as well as the largest snowfall since 1982!  What did we do to diserve His "cold sholder" on Easter?

Other strange happenings... On Thursday, our lead dog, Spirit, found a chicken on the property.  Yes, she was alive and, no, Spirit did not hurt her.  The question is:  Where did she come from?  There are at least two nearby ranches that raise that breed of chicken, along with at least one more that usually raises a different breed.  Or did someone just start trying to raise chickens?  We do not have the faintest idea.  If someone comes to the door asking about a chicken, they can have her.

We did have a good Easter, even if we could not leave the house, except for a snowball fight. We still make the traditional cheese paska. Dinner was a ham with all the trimmings. By this evening, almost all of the snow was gone.
